No, I will not kill that spider for you.

I'm soooo tired. My eyes are all melting and my back has been busted from bending over all day. Is it just me or is the sore back a common theme of mine?

Ok. Well this is just one of those things that I thought of in light of recent events (viz my friend requesting several times for me to kill a huntsman spider who was relaxing on the wall of my house.)

I know there are a lot of people out there who hate spiders with a passion, and I can understand that, because they are poisonous, and yes, they have 8 legs and most of the animals we like are bipeds or quadrapeds, and yes, they are a bit scuttly.

I have people request that I kill spiders for them, and I have also had people so horrified by my posting a picture of a spider, that they filled the thread up with posts so that the thread would go to a new page and they would no longer have to view it.

But I like spiders. Ever since I was a child I have enjoyed the presence of huntsman spiders in my house. They don't weave webs, so there's no mess, and they eat insects that you don't want hanging around. They're like little friends keeping you company.

There are a lot of spiders in Australia.
Personally, I think that if a spider is not dangerous (and huntsmen are mildly poisonous, but non-aggressive), and it doesn't cause a mess, than why kill it? I will kill cockroaches, they spread disease, and I will kill flies and millipedes and mice and rats, but I leave the spiders. I personally don't think you should kill an animal simply because you hate it. If killing it will provide a substantial benefit to you, or if the animal is dangerous or disease spreading, than that's a case..but if you just don't...like it, then why kill it?

I have never been bitten by a spider in my life, even when I was a small child and I frequently handled them.

It's the same with bees too..people who freak out when a bee FLIES PAST THEM. Bees are non-aggressive, and they will not sting you if they are near you! I have only once been stung by a bee, when I put my elbow on it by mistake when climbing out of a swimming pool. They're quite tolerant animals, and will generally only sting when there is a threat to their life.

So to sum it up...if someone asks me to kill a spider, I won't do it. I'm perfectly happy to put it outside (which I have been known to do), but I don't see why I should kill it for you.

I had a table spider at one stage, not sure the type, I think a small wolf spider, that lived on the table outside and used to come out when I had a smoke out there. he was around for a while, then disappeared. never thought about killing him (I say him, I don't know...) used to enjoy him attacking the ants, which he wasn't very good at, which may be the reason he disappeared.

I don't mind huntsmans. I get a little freaked by the presence of poisonous spiders, and we get quite a few of those around my house. So with a view to avoiding an accident (say... treading on a redback and winding up in hospital) if there's one of those guys in the house, it meets its maker.

I totally agree with you about bees/wasps. Numerous friends of mine have become totally freaked out when they're around and all they want to do is run away/scream/wave their hands around frantically. I just tell them to be still and wait for them to fly away if the insect is close and they're worried.
Ahhh, you Australians and your higher collection of poisonous or dangerous creatures than anywhere else in the world. Apart from Adders and the very rare scorpions you find in the UK, I can't think of any other creature off the top of my head with the ability to poison you, allergics excepted.

I agree with you on the not killing spiders thing. I usually try and capture them and let them outside. I tend to get rid of flies and moths though, and wasps which I hate being inside the house. How come no matter how many bees there are they never come in through windows, but you get one wasp and all of a sudden it's half way through your house?

The only spiders we tend to find a lot in our house are wolf spiders, which are completely harmless but a bugger to catch because they move so quickly.
I've never actually had a wasp in the house. Countless flies, birds (if I remember rightly), a possum, zillions of millipedes, possibly bees, spiders, but no wasps.

Nicely said! Spiders are friends.

Some people react the same way to wolf spiders in Vermont (which is in the states.) They don't get as big as huntsman spiders, but they can get quite large--the ones around here are usually around 3.5 inches/6-7cm, which is enough to give most people a fright when they see one. Even I have to admit, they look a little creepy with eggs on their abdomen...

but spiders are like organic pest-control, so I think they're awesome.

I hate spiders, but I don't kill them if I can avoid it. I hate all bugs, but I only kill them if they're mosquitos, pretty much...
People who kill bugs and spiders because they hate them annoy me. If I see a bug inside that I dislike, I trap it in a piece of paper and take it outside. If I can't do that, I just move away from it.
Well said, I agree. :)

YAY someone agrees with me!! I like spiders >.<

I got in trouble at school for biting this guy who deliberately squished a spider during a lesson making it a point that I was watching.

SPIDERS ARE FRIENDS! :D

haha okay, you may hate me for this, but im just sharing with you personally why I do it.
I kill all the spiders and bugs that come in my house that get in my way.
Because its not that I dont like (well I dont) but its because I really genuinly am seriously freaked out by them. Anyone that knows me understands just how much I hate moths, they honestly scare me in the sense that they just flap around your face and stuff and its totally icky.
I have respect for those people that dont kill the bugs that come in their house. But I have two reactions. I either run away, or I kill it. Fight or flight instinct, because even though it seems silly to be scared of something so tiny and harmless compared to us, if you have a fear of something instincts kick in reacting to the fact that you are scared.
It's just like people have phobias of lots of things.

Believe in the people around you, they can do incredible things.
Well yeah, I understand that people are at a liberty to do whatever in their own house, I just find it a little annoying that people will come to my house and tell me to get rid of my spiders :P
I have a bit of a phobia of cockroaches, and I always kill them (but I'm pretty sure most people would kill cockroaches.)
